Match report After the relative warmth of mid April at Ilford for the pre-season friendly, it was back to Baltic conditions for the opening Division 6 encounter with Kesgrave 2nd. A last minute call up for Dan Miller in place of Angus Lockhart, the only change to a relatively strong Mersea side. Luke Conway won the toss and elected to field, with the home side moving comfortably to 77 for 1 in just 16 overs, Dan Miller (1 for 19 from 5) taking his first first XI wicket. However, from a position of dominance, Kesgrave folded with the introduction of Luke Conway and Ollie Wyatt, losing five wickets for 7 runs as they slipped to 84 for 6. Conway bowled an economic spell that yielded 3 for 6 from 9 overs, while Wyatt was equally tight with 3 for 20 from his nine overs. Kesgrave managed to get up to a decent enough total from that position, with Brooks (29no) and Minhas (48no) putting on an unbroken 81 for the 8th wicket to see their innings close at 189 for 7.
Mersea did not make the best of starts in reply, with Adam Rutter and David Taylor both falling cheaply, before a steadying the ship partnership of 67 between Marcus Hobson (38) and Seb Gladwell laid a crucial platform. However, the game swung back in favour of Kesgrave as Conway (11) and Ali Manhire (0) both fell cheaply to leave Mersea precariously placed at 108 for 5 with 15 overs remaining,. Stuart Elson (20) played a vitally important innings, and with Gladwell completing his second fifty of the season and growing in confidence Mersea remained positive. There was still time for some more nervousness as Mersea slipped from 166 for 5 to 176 for 8, as Elson, Chris Storrar and Ollie Wyatt all fell cheaply. However, Gladwell superbly kept his cool for an unbeaten 96 and reach 1500 career runs, to see Mersea edge to a two wicket victory with five balls remaining.
