Match report The second eleven travelled to league leaders Chappel & Wakes Colne, and the best result of the afternoon was Graham Pryke winning the toss. Mersea batted first and made steady progress with Mick Laver and Kevin Hewes (15) putting on 60 for the first wicket. Laver went onto top score with 36, while Ian Young added 30. A late 32 run partnership for the sixth wicket between Amit Tiwari (13no) and Allan Highfield (19) saw Mersea up to their total of 152 for 6 from 40 overs. The first over of the reply saw wicket keeper Tony Bailey, realize that he had not put his pads on when coming out to field - truly village and Golden Balls worthy. The Chappel skipper Jack Perfect-Brown hit a rapid 18 from 7 balls before inexplicably missing a full delivery from Amit, which was to be Mersea's only success of the afternoon. Thereafter, Chris Carter gave an exhibition of batting striking an unbeaten 100 from an incredible 35 balls, which included fourteen boundaries, as Chappel reached the target in just 14 overs. As I said the best result was batting first !!
