Match report A remarkable game at The Glebe on Saturday, where ECB pitch inspectors may be involved ! Saxmundham were the visitors for a first ever encounter between the two clubs. Winning the toss, the visitors elected to field, and a less than dramatic start saw openers Angus Lockhart and Darren Rumble reach 14, before the wickets began to clatter. Tom Sanderson's 27 ball 10 at number seven proved to be the highlight of the innings as Mersea slumped to 45 all out. Thomas Five-year (4 for 3) and Robert Battle (4 for 23) the main wicket takers.
In reply, Saxmundham had their own problems as they quickly faltered to 0 for 3, which became 4 for 5, with five of their top six batsmen recording ducks. Ray Halls (10) and Billy Thurston (9) vainly put on a partnership as the visitors clawed their back, but once that was broken the end came rapidly, with Saxmundham bowled out for 25, and Mersea victors by 20 runs. Darren Rumble (5 for 15) and Luke Conway (4 for 7) the Mersea wicket takers.
In the history books it was the lowest ever league score defended by a Mersea side, and the match aggregate of 70 (with all wickets down) was fifth lowest.
