West Mersea Cricket Club Lost by 17 runs

Match report West Mersea choked a winning position at home to neighbours Abberton, to see them slip to fourth in the table. With an end of season feel to the game, both sides only had ten men. Abberton batted first on a very wet wicket, and were indebted to Darren Davies (44) at the top of the order for holding the innings together. Abberton lost five wickets for 29 runs, to slip to 57 for 5, as Luke Conway (3 for 29) and Kevin Hewes (2 for 26) claimed the wickets. Mark Johnson (38) scored some important runs down the order, whilst a last wicket stand of 17 between Andy Trussler (19no) and Steve Whitfield saw the Lions up to their score of 141. Mersea made a poor start in reply slipping to 24 for 3, as Scott Gilbey (2 for 19 from 8) and Andy Trussler took the early wickets. Luke Conway then came to the crease and seemed to be taking the game single handily from the Lions, with a hard hitting 63 from 45 balls, however, when he holed out in the deep Mersea were 101 for 6, and still requiring 40 runs from 12 overs. Hewes (13) and Mike Snow (13) edged Mersea to within 17 runs, but with pressure applied the runs dried up and Mersea were bowled out for 124.
