Match report The Platinum Jubilee celebrations at Mersea saw two days of Test Matches, starting on Thursday 2nd June, with a James Rutter XI taking on a Ben Rumble XI. James won the toss and rather apologetically told Ben he had no option but to bat – all seemed very sincere ! Rutter led the way for his side plundering a century before retiring. Trevor Trout (34), Jesse Elson (a career best 26) and India Reilly (a career best 21) also contributed to the sides 243 all out in 48 overs. Seb Gladwell (1 for 30), Louis Elson (1 for 26) and John Clarke (1 for 27) had all picked up wickets earlier in the innings, but the headlines belonged to Freya Reilly, who at 11 year's 150 days became the youngest player to take a five wicket haul as she claimed 5 for 18 from 4 overs. She was also the first female player to take a five wicket haul or score a fifty for the club.
A fifty partnership for the opening wicket gave the Ben Rumble XI a good start with Louis Elson (37) and Tony Butler (a career best 27) putting on 52. However, three quick wickets saw the side in jeopardy with tea approaching. Jesse Elson picked up 2 for 10 from his five overs, while Graham Pryke’s miserable start to the season continued scoring just another single, before being bowled by James Rutter. After tea, the afternoon belonged to Ricky Provan who scored an unbeaten career best 89, and enjoyed partnerships of 77 with Louis Elson, 38 with Seb Gladwell (12) and 34 not out with John Clarke (10no) as stumps was drawn with the score on 202 for 5 from 50 overs. The match drawn.
