India win World Cup!
In a keenly contested match at the home of (Mersea) cricket on the 18th June,
“India” represented by a team from Mersea Island School defeated “Bangladesh”
represented by a team from Birch Primary School by 28 runs.
The Tournament was organised through Essex Cricket and hosted by West Mersea
Cricket Club. Local schools participating in the Chance to Shine scheme were
invited to send teams representing one of the Countries contesting the current
Men’s Cricket World Cup. The competition itself followed the same format as the
adult event with each team playing the other once, the top four teams contesting
Semi finals.
Those Primary schools participating were ;
Birch, representing Bangladesh.
Layer, with two teams, representing Afghanistan and South Africa.
Mersea, with two teams, representing India and Pakistan.
Tollesbury, representing Australia.
The final itself provided a showcase for two contrasting but effective approaches.
India regularly finding the boundary with seven sixes and seven fours while
Bangladesh were far more adept at pushing the ball into space and taking singles,
there being only five “Dot” balls in their entire innings. This despite there being
an exceptionally high standard of fielding displayed by players from all teams
throughout the tournament.
The presciently named India the victorious Captain, received the Trophy on behalf
of her team just in time to avoid the threatened Monsoon, or at least drizzle, which
dampened everything except the spirits of those who had remained for the closing
“Ceremony”.
Huge congratulations are due to all the participating teams who showed the highest
possible level of sportsmanship throughout the competition coupled with not
inconsiderable skills sometimes from players who may have played little or no
cricket before.
Our thanks to Steve Daines for his umpiring and all the Teachers and helpers who
helped make so many smiling faces on the day. Particular thanks to Helen and
Mark who supplied tea and coffee for the umpires to consume while manning their
posts!
