Match report West Mersea took the honours in the first Battle of the Strood this season at The Glebe. Rain arrived right on the scheduled start and the match was then delayed until 3.30pm. Abberton took first knock in the shortened game, and were unable to break the early shackles delivered by Luke Conway (1 for 11 from 4) and Kevin Hewes (0 for 7 from 4). Trevor Vince (2 for 20) then capitalised on the early pressure taken two wickets in his first over as Abberton slipped to 20 for 3. Veteran Badger Ball (29) top scored, but with only Steve Cowland (17) and Richard Pink (10) making double figures the Lions were restricted to 70 for 6.
A wicket a piece for Scott Gilbey and Jamie Hall reduced the Islanders to 19 for 2, before an unbeaten third wicket stand of 55 between Luke Conway (42no from 33) and Ian Young (18no from 25) saw Mersea home with over seven overs to spare. The victory for Mersea lifts them off the foot of the table for the first time of the season.
