Match report The Two Counties first eleven opened their 2016 campaign with a visit to Braintree seconds on 23rd April. In arctic conditions Mersea won the toss and batted first. Adam Rutter (20) and Digs Taylor got the islanders off to a solid enough start with an opening stand of 34. Dan Lambert contributed 20 from the number four position, while Taylor played the anchor role posting 20 from 70 balls. Guest debutant Anil Kumar (25), Jason Hoggarth (15) and Luke Conway saw Mersea get up to 162 all out with 8 balls of the innings remaining. Braintree skipper Geoff Eveling took 6 for 33 for the home side.
In reply Braintree were unable to cope with an almost unplayable Tom Sanderson, who struggled to hit the proverbial barn door in 2015, bowled an excellent spell to take 5 for 28. Darren Rumble backed Sanderson up to return 4 for 38, and at one point Braintree were in deep trouble at 37 for 7. They finally recovered to 77 all out giving Mersea an opening day victory by 85 runs.
