Match report West Mersea opened their NECL Division Four season with a 29 run win at Kirby. After winning the toss the islanders were in trouble early on, slipping to 15 for 3, as new Kirby signing Kevin Walker (3 for 28) made the early inroads, whilst James Pearce (0 for 10 from 9) ensured the run rate was fairly static. Ian Young (27) and Mick Laver (28) rebuilt the innings, before Luke Conway hit a rapid 44 from just 23 balls. Jason Hoggarth and Matt Wilkin added some useful cameos at the end, but Mersea ended at a middling 140 for 9. Kirby, made the worse possible start losing Michael Breame for a duck in the first over to Matt Wilkin (1 for 12 from 7). A fifty partnership between Adam Warnes and John Reynolds (18) then seemed to put Kirby in control, before the introduction of flighted filth from Trevor Vince (4 for 19) and Neil Goodridge (3 for 19) saw wickets tumble. Warnes was seventh man out for 56, as Kirby were bowled out for 111, with eight overs to spare.
