Match report On Sunday 21st June, West Mersea took the honours in the ‘Battle of the Strood’, with a derby victory at Abberton. The division is so tight, the win lifted the islanders from bottom to second place, while Abberton replace them in bottom place having started the day in third. Ten Man Abberton batted first and incredibly all but one batsmen failed to reach double figures, however, no one apart from number nine Will House (51) managed to pass twenty, as Mersea picked up wickets on a regular basis. House had come to the wicket with the Lions at 105 for 7, so his innings was valuable in lifting the score to a defendable total. Mersea skipper David Taylor (3 for 32) was the most successful of the visitors bowlers, although there were wicket taking spells for Graham Bowers (2 for 21 from 9) and James Rutter (2 for 10). The reply was dominated by a second wicket stand of 82 between Bowers (60) and Ian Young (25). David Booker (3 for 31 from 9) instigated a mini collapse but with James Rutter (24no), Mersea were able to claim victory with six overs to spare.
