Match report On Sunday 2nd August, Mersea were in action in the NECL League Plate semi final against close neighbours. Abberton. Abberton won the toss and were in trouble early on slipping to 39 for 3, with Nick Allflatt (25) scoring the majority of the runs. Phil Lingard (38) and Mark Johnson set about rebuilding the innings with a 55 run partnership for the fifth wicket. Johnson (69no) then found a useful ally in Jamie Hall (20) as the pair put on a further 55 to eventually lift the Lions to a challenging 191 for 7. There were two wickets a piece for Kevin Hewes (2 for 26), Trevor Vince (2 for 41) and James Bibby (2 for 44), while Luke Conway bowled an economic eight overs which returned 0 for 16. Mersea were seemingly in control when their turn came to bat, as Adam Rutter (49) and David Taylor (43) smashed an opening stand of 92 in fourteen overs. A decisive bowling spell from Steve Whitfield (3 for 28), including both openers and Chris Pettit (2 for 11 from 8) saw Mersea lose six wickets for 29 runs and the advantage swing back to Abberton. Jon Perry (3 for 37) also chipped in with vital wickets for the Lions as Mersea wobbled to 154 for 8. Mersea’s tail then began to wag, with Cam Williams (20 from 14 balls) leading the charge, however, his demise with one over to go, left Chris Graham the responsibility of scoring nine runs from the last over to see his side over the line. In a tense final over, a four from the third ball raised the hopes of the home team, and a further two took the Islanders to within two runs of the Abberton total, before Graham (12) was bowled fifth ball by Jake Harris.
