Copdock & OI 3rd v West Mersea Cricket Club TC 1st on Sat 16 Apr 2022 at 12:30pm
West Mersea Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets

Match report An incredible opening to the 2022 Two Counties 1st XI campaign at Copdock, saw a record breaking performance with the ball from 14 year old Daniel Gladwell. After winning the toss the home side elected to bat, and after surviving five overs from Gladwell and Darren Rumble and reaching 27 without loss, they were then plunged into dissaray as Gladwell got into his work. Taking three wickets in his third over, he then backed it up with six more wickets in his fourth, fifth and sixth overs, to take the first nine wickets to fall and return ridiculous figures of 9 for 2. He was probably denied a tenth wicket by virtue that he had bowled his age related quota of overs !. Darren Rumble meanwhile, was taking some treatment at the other end, with his seven overs going for 51, before taking the final wicket with the score on 64, at the start of the 15th over.
In reply, on a day when Essex had struggled to chase down 83 at Somerset, Mersea made an uninspired start, as after two wides started the opening over, they then saw Charley Garwood and Daniel Gladwell both returned to the pavilion in the over to see them 2 for 2 after one. Luke Conway (26) and Gareth Mason then eased Mersea into the ascendancy with a 45 run partnership for the 3rd wicket, before Conway fell. Mason (13no) and Tom Sanderson (10no) then saw Mersea to a seven wicket success at the start of the 12th over.
Daniel Gladwell's 9 for 2 is the third best bowling performance in the club's history, just being bettered by the two ten wicket hauls that have been recorded. It is the best bowling performance by a Mersea player in the Two Counties League, and it was the first nine wicket haul in 30 years. Daniel is also the fourth youngest to take five wickets in a game for Mersea, the others ahead of him being Stephen Daniels, Stuart Hempstead and Charles Gayton.
The game also saw Ed VanderMark make his debut for the club, while there were 1st XI debuts for Ruben Butler and Charley Garwood. Luke Conway made his 200th Two Counties 1st XI appearance.
