Match report The first team edged a tight affair at previously unbeaten West Bergholt on 7th May, to go to the top of Division Seven at the early stage of the season. Electing to field in damp conditions after early morning rain, Mersea made the best possible start with Digs Taylor claiming an early catch off the bowling of Darren Rumble, to reduce the hosts to 0 for 1. Rumble bowled well throughout picking up 4 for 44 from his 10 overs. Only Jack Montgomery (47) showed any fluency at the wicket as all the Mersea bowlers stifled the innings. Luke Conway 2 for 21, Ben Rumble 2 for 42 and Matt Wilkin 1 for 31 picking up the other wickets as Bergholt were bowled out for 140 at the start of the 38th over. Good outfielding which resulted in five catches and a run out backed up a good bowling performance.
In reply, Mersea made heavy work of the mediocre chase, despite five players reaching double figures only Luke Conway and Gareth Mason (24) scored more 20. In the end skipper Luke Conway held his nerve to score an unbeaten 62 from 32 balls, and recording his fifty in 26 balls to see Mersea to a two wicket success.
