Match report The first XI extended their run to five wins on the bounce to remain top of Division Seven, after a convincing eight wicket victory over third place Copford 2nd. Invited to bat first Copford were unable to be released from the shackles of some tight bowling, as well as some good out fielding that saw six catches. A tidy spell by captain Luke Conway in the middle of the innings claiming 3 for 31 from 12 overs ensured that Copford were unable to get close to 200. Ben Rumble picked up his customary three wicket haul (3 for 53), and there were two wickets a piece for Darren Rumble (2 for 47) and Rory Green (2 for 4) as Copford were bowled out for 163 in the 43rd over.
Mersea made a rapid start with 37 put on in 7.3 overs, before Copford struck to dismiss Digs Taylor for 10, and then two balls later Chris Storrar for a fleeting 4. However, thereafter, James Rutter and Gareth Mason rushed Mersea to victory in 28 overs, Rutter scoring an unbeaten 92 to pass 1000 runs for the season, and a record 531 runs for the month of June, while Gareth Mason (50no) completed his maiden half century for the club just before the end of the game, the pair putting on an unbeaten 123 for the third wicket.
