Match report Probably the most amazing result of the season, the first eleven missing at least eight players for their trip to Chappel & WC 2nd. Six hours later Mersea had won by two runs after posting 301, seen two centurions hit career bests and record a club record partnership, and then a five wicket haul to add as Mersea won in the last over.
Batting first after winning the toss in hot conditions, Mersea opened up with James Rutter, and resident number eleven Darren Rumble - 44.1 overs later they were still together, having recorded a new partnership club record of 297, beating Kevin Hewes and Mick Laver's 262 in 2001. James recorded his seventh century of the season, and with it a new career best of 180 not out, which saw him pass Adam Rutter's TC 1st XI record aggregate for a season of 794. Darren recorded his second career century and also a career best 105, and with Luke Conway chipping in with 3 not out Mersea posted 301 for 1.
In reply, Chappel made a useful start through Rose and the prolific Bella Johnson with 58 coming up for the first wicket before Darren (now on life support - as he was to bowl 12 overs straight through) claiming the wicket of Rose. Jack Cousins came in determined to keep the run rate up, and with both Johnson and Cousins reaching fifty the hosts were well placed. Darren (2 for 86) claimed the wicket of Johnson (64) to a catch by Jim Hall, and shortly afterwards the host were 131 for 3 as Luke Conway (1 for 45) claimed his solitary success. With the opening bowlers out of the attack, Chappel began to open up, with Dan Miller ( 0 for 27 from 2) and Ben Rumble taking some treatment before the second drinks break. Immediately after the drinks break a crucial wicket as Cousins was dismissed for 78, with redemption for Dan Miller claiming the catch off of Rumble. Thereafter, control seemed to come back for the islanders, as Chappel slipped to 223 for 6 with just eight overs remaining, and Adam Boyce and Ben Rumble both bowling tidily. However, there was to be another twist as Chappel skipper Ben Jackson and Harry Carter took the attack to Mersea and put on 54 to lift the score to 277 for 8, before Rumble bowled Carter for 21 off of 15 balls. Boyce in particular lost his line bowling a number of wides, while the batters were happy to farm the strike off of Rumble. The breakthrough of the wicket of Carter saw Rumble, take a second wicket in the over and with Boyce claiming the wicket of the number ten Chappel were 285 for 9, but with Jackson still at the wicket. Richard Johnson took two boundaries off the 43rd over to make the equation required eight from two, Boyce (a career best 1 for 58) found his line for an excellent 44th over with just three coming from it, which took the game to the last over to be bowled by Rumble. Jackson took a single from the first ball, Johnson then faced two dots balls before being bowled on the fourth ball to see Mersea claim the spoils in a fantastic match. Ben Rumble returning 5 for 79, and in the process taking his 150th wicket for the club.
