Match report Mersea began their second spell in the North Essex Cricket League 40 over competition, with a visit to long time friends Great Horkesley & Lexden. Winning the toss, Ben Rumble elected to bowl first. Despite an early inspired spell of three wickets for Seb Gladwell, opener Hamza Arif was taking the attack single handidly to the Mersea bowlers. He struck 53, before becoming fourth man out with the score on 83, leg before to Luke Conway. Mersea Saturday player Ali Manhire (25) and Johnathan Hassan (30) put some useful middle order runs into the innings. Good spells from the Wyatt brothers kept the pressure on for the islanders, before Ben Rumble (4 for 31) including his 100th career wicket started to make inroads. Seb Gladwell returned to take the last wicket, to return a career best 4 for 24, as Great Horkelsey & Lexden were bowled out in the 39th over for 161.
A nervy start saw Mersea lose opener Tony Butler to a golden duck in the second over, the fourth of the weekend. However, therafter, there was just one winner as Luke Conway capped a fine weekend by adding a century to his fifty of the previous day. Along with opener James Rutter (58no), the pair put on 161 for the second wicket to see Mersea to a nine wicket success in just 21.3 overs. Conway recorded his 18th club century and was unbeaten on 105, his fifty coming off 22 balls and his century 58 balls.
