Match report A re-arranged friendly against St Johns Billericay on 7th May, as original opponents Rankins pulled out of the fixture. Nevertheless, a competitive fixture was enjoyed with all three results possible in the latter stages of the game (how friendlies should be). Mersea batted first and after losing both openers fairly cheaply saw a third wicket partnership of 66 develop between Louis Elson and debutant Jim Hall, who posted a useful 44. However, once the partnership was broken only Seb Gladwell (9 from 40 balls) was able to support the obdurate Louis Elson who stayed at the crease for over two hours for an unbeaten 27. Incredibly in the latter stages of the innings there were three golden ducks to boost the early season totals in the Mallard Trophy, Ed Vandermark, Jesse Elson and Ruben Butler (run out to suicidal single) the unlucky trio.
Mersea then reduced the hosts to 30 for 4, with Ruben Butler taking a career best 3 for 18 from his five overs. Dan Miller (0 for 10) also bowled a tidy opening spell and with some excellent outfielding backing up the bowling. Ed Vandermark (1 for 17) and Jesse Elson (2 for 34) further reduced St Johns, with only Darren Hickson (38) holding the innings together. Ollie Wyatt then bowled an excellent five over spell, which included four maidens as saw him return a career best 2 for 2, to see St Johns slip to nine wickets down and 16 required. The old heads of Fairclough and Bowerman ensured that there was to be no final success for a very good afternoon for the Mersea youngesters, as St Johns won by one wicket in the 35th over.
