Match report Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun, or in Mersea and Rayleigh 7th case play cricket for five hours in varying degrees of rain ! The match marked a club debut for Oliver Garnett and Jonathan Snelling, while it was the 50th club appearance for Daniel Miller.
Mersea won the toss and made an encouraging start with Seb Gladwell (14, including his first six) and Ruben Butler (10) quickly putting runs on the board. However, three quick wickets, including that of Garnett for a duck reduced Mersea to 29 for 3. Jonathan Snelling (33) and Ollie Wyatt (29) then put together a stand of 46 for the fourth wicket, with Ollie going onto to enjoy stands of 30 with Louis Elson (10) and 25 with Tony Butler, the latter scoring an unbeaten 19 as Mersea were bowled out, in the 31st over for 137.
In reply, Rayleigh never threatened the Mersea total, with Steve Daines (1 for 10) and Tony Butler (a career best 2 for 6) setting the tone. Louis Elson (1 for 3), Seb Gladwell (1 for 2 - taking his 50th club wicket) and Ruben Butler (1 for 0) all claimed cheap wickets, while Ollie Wyatt bettered his career best set last week with figures of 3 for 6 as Rayleigh were bowled out for 59.
