Match report The second eleven began their campaign in Division Nine South at Holmewood House School in Lexden, taking on close neighbours Abberton 3rd. Mersea were asked to bat after losing the toss, and all six main batters managed to reach double figures to give the side some early season encouragement. Top scorer was opener Chris Day, who on club debut posted 38 not out having carried his bat for the full 40 overs. Tom Sanderson hit a lively 29 towards the end of the innings from 22 balls, while Jon Snelling 21 and Ruben Butler 20 both reached twenty.
Abberton's task was made easier with openers putting on 64 for the first wicket, before Ben Rumble (2 for 33) quickly struck twice. A third wicket stand of 93, by fifty makers Callum Newland (51) and Jason Newland (58no) got Abberton almost to the target, Atiq Khaksar (1 for 12) dismiising the opener, just before Abberton secured a seven wicket victory.
