Match report In the friendly on Glebe 2, Mersea were thankful to Braintree 3rds who stepped in at the eleventh hour to fulfil the fixture after Chelmsford were unable to raise a side. Mersea were able to supply the visitors with four players to make the fixture viable, Trevor Trout the wondering chairman managed to bag himself a Braintree shirt after the Maldon success last week. The game saw debuts for Evan Chamblerain and Jon Crowdey, while Matt Pryke was making his first appearance in 19 years. Batting first Braintree posted 184 for 5 from their 40 overs, with Evan Chamberlain taking his first wicket for the club (a hit wicket) in a spell of 1 for 21, and Matt Pryke taking a career best 1 for 12. The other three wickets to fall were taken by Charlotte Granger (3 for 32). In reply, only Graham Pryke (15) reached double figures, and in an unusual precedent opened the batting with his son - however, being a man of superstition Graham still opted to bat at two leaving his son, who had not scored a run for the club in three previous innings, the prospect of a dreaded diamond duck . Thankfully, Matt got his first runs for the club and avoided the embarrassment. The Braintree bowlers, supplement by our own Shannon Turner (2 for 7) and Henry Reilly (2 for 5) - including the wicket of sister Freya, were too good for the Mersea team who were bowled out for 54.
