Match report The opening match of the 2021 campaign saw a friendly against Chelmsford Spartans at Rye Mill Lane, Kelvedon. Henry Reilly was in charge of the side for the first time, having missed out on a captaincy at the end of last season.
Batting first Chelmsford scored rapidly, but Mersea stuck to the task and bowled them out in 31 overs for 246. Oliver Wyatt on debut took the first wicket of the season on his way to figures of 1 for 40. Tom Butler was the most successful bowler on the afternoon with 3 for 48, while there were two wickets each for John Clarke (2 for 8) and Ben Rumble (2 for 17). Other notable first's saw John Clarke, take the first catch of the season.
In reply, there was a rapid half century for Luke Conway (59) from 39 balls, with his fifty coming off 30 balls, in an opening stand of 85 with James Rutter. Strangely not a six to be had in Conners innings, just 11 fours. Rutter (66) top scored on the afternoon, where no other Mersea player got to double figures. A helpful 41 extras seeing Mersea up to 194 all out. Ben Rumble scored the first Mallard point of the season, but was joined by three others (Steve Daines, Henry Reilly and John Clarke). Still waiting for the first legitimate six of the season, although India Reilly will be laying claim to that achievement, a two turned into a six by four overthrows !
