Review of the Month of June

Almost half way through the season, and the current state of play on the field for West Mersea -

In June, West Mersea played 23 matches, winning 9, losing 10, 2 were Drawn and 2 were cancelled, overall 47 have been played, 19 won, 21 lost, 2 Drawn and 5 Cancelled.

The first team are currently top of Division Seven having played all the teams once, not so good for the second team as they are propping up Division Nine South, although there was success in their last game against Abberton 3rd where they posted three figures for the first time in 23 games. Cornetto's all round.

The Sunday side have dropped back to third place in the NECL after a heavy defeat against Great Waltham.

63 players have now played for the club at senior level in 2022, with five making their club debut this month.

Most Runs in June were scored by James Rutter, with 663, a new club record for a calendar month, as well as taking his seasonal total to an ever increasing record of 1196. In that tally, he has a record four centuries, and a record equalling nine fifties.

Most Wickets in June were taken by Ben Rumble with 13, making him the leading wicket taker for the club with 38 so far this season.

Three players shared the prize for most catches in June, with Louis Elson, Rory Green and Ben Rumble each taking four. Overall James Rutter has 12 catches, of which 9 are at the wicket and also nine stumpings. Rory Green is the leading outfield catcher with 7 catches.

Merit points for June was not surprisingly James Rutter, who claimed a new monthly record of 762.

In all the club has scored five centuries, 20 fifties, 4 five wicket hauls and 22 three wicket hauls.

Top of the averages at the end of June

Batting - 7 completed innings  - James Rutter 1196 runs @ 92.00

Bowling - 40 overs - Matt Wilkin 10 wickets @ 10.10

Outstanding Individual Performances this month saw James Rutter hit a career best unbeaten 161 in a five wicket victory at Great Totham. His total represented an incredible 80% of the run chase.

Also at the start of the month in the Jubilee Test Matches, Freya Reilly made an incredible debut, becoming the youngest player to take a five wicket haul for Mersea, at 11 years and 150 days, taking 5 for 18 against the James Rutter XI. 

The Six Hit race is at this stage of the season unusually close, usually Luke Conway is off into the distance by now. There have been 46 sixes in total and James Rutter leads with 18 with Conway three back on 15.

The Mallard Trophy has seen 78 ducks to date, of which Seb Gladwell (8) is closing in on the seasonal club record 11. He leads the Mallard with 10 points, with his nearest challengers being Ruben Butler and Ben Rumble both with 7 points.
